Speaking at the presentation of winners of the initiative, Bayo Adekanmbi, Chief Marketing Officer of MTN Nigeria, expressed the company’s willingness to demonstrate its values while keeping its promises to exceed customers’ expectations and set bench marks in helping them become better people. According to Adekanmbi, “we are celebrating people that we would call the better me generation. APC to drag First Lady to International Criminal Court

APC says it has concluded plans to drag the first Lady Patience Jonathan before the International Criminal Court over her recent remarks at the PDP Presidential campaign rally in Calabar, Cross Rivers state where she called on people to stone anyone who chanted Change around them.

The APC said Mrs Jonathan's comment was calling on PDP supporters in the state to attack members of the APC. The party likened Mrs Jonathan to the former First Lady of Cote d’Ivoire, Mrs Laurent Gbagbo who was indicted by the ICC over matters bothering on election crisis in 2010 during her husband's re-election

"Change, as the entire country knows by now, is the slogan of the APC – the rallying cry of a political party that wishes to bring hope of greater and better things to come for Nigeria and Nigerians. “By her statement, Mrs. Jonathan was clearly calling on the PDP supporters in Calabar to attack supporters and campaigners of the APC in the state. Mrs. Jonathan does not occupy any formal office in the Nigerian government as the position of the First Lady is not recognised by the Nigerian constitution. But Mrs. Gbagbo’s case shows the ICC’s awareness of how someone beyond formal governmental and military hierarchies can be identified as responsible for serious international crimes. Patience Jonathan’s incontrovertible hate speech not only contravened the laws of the land, but also went completely against the Abuja peace accord jointly signed by the two presidential candidates, Muhammadu Buhari and President Goodluck Jonathan – a gesture which is aimed at forestalling violence before, during and after the 2015 elections. The PDP supporters in the state, who may not know better, could easily yield themselves to the First Lady’s admonition and embark on a process of wanton stoning and other attacks against the APC members.”the party said
The party says the letter to the ICC is signed by the APC Presidential Campaign Director and Governor of Rivers state, Rotimi Ameachi and would be forwarded to the ICC today March 9th. It also said that the Inspector General of the Police and the National Human Rights Commission would also be sent copies of the letter.

Political Party Supporters Slug it Out on Rubbin’ Minds! Watch the Team GEJ Versus Team GMB Debate

Rubbin’ Minds, the TV show hosted by Ebuwa Obi-Uchendu is a Sunday favourite on Nigerian TV. Yesterday, the producers of the show took things up a notch by bringing an interesting panel of debaters for a supporters debate.
With the Nigerian presidential elections coming close, Ebuka moderates the ‘battle’ between ‘Team GEJ’ and ‘Team GMB’.
It’s really interesting to see very vocal Twitter political pundits bring their points to life in front of a camera.

Ifeoluwa Olawole: Women – Burning Bright Torches Across Generations

We are well past the time when Abigail Adams had to write her husband—then president of the United States—reminding him to “remember the ladies and be more generous and favorable to them than your ancestors. Do not put much unlimited power into the hands of the husbands. Remember all men would be tyrants if they could…”
Things have remarkably improved since then, and more women have paved the way for the rest of us coming along. In the United States for instance, there have been several amendments to the constitution in favour of women. There has been the Title IX Amendment, a portion of the United States Education Amendment, which protects people from discrimination based on sex in education programs and activities that receive federal financial assistance equal education for women. There has also been Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which protects individuals against employment discrimination on the basis of five categories, one of which is sex.
However, we are still very far away from the destination. Women are definitely still discriminated against, sometimes ostracized, and a lot of times seen as the less of both sexes. Unfortunately, in many countries, women are practically enslaved. In some developed countries, equality has been reduced—yes, reduced—to putting a few women in important positions, and leaving it at just that. We now have a female Attorney General, they say. Or we now have a female Minister of Petroleum. While that is a welcome development, it does not reduce the impact of denying a woman a job because of fear that she might someday decide to have children. It does not reduce the havoc that is wrecked when woman is objectified and made to believe that besides the extra tissues on her chest—breasts—and her backside, she really is nothing.
Now, we can debate about the women issues from here till eternity, but if we do nothing about it, it makes no sense. The most important fight in this battle is equality; that men and women are equal members of the society. Period.
On whether or not to be a feminist, here’s my answer: In the words of the legendary Maya Angelou, “I am a feminist. I have been a female for a long time now. I’d be stupid not to be on my own side.” I always used to wonder whether or not I was a feminist because I had seen that concept abused time and time again. But I have since realized that to say you aren’t a feminist would be to insult great women like Betty Friedan who fought endlessly for women. It would be to insult great women like Myra Bradwell, who when she denied admission to the Illinois state bar because she was a woman—even after passing the bar exams in flying colors—fought HARD that women be allowed to become whatever they so desired. I imagine that without Bradwell, many female attorneys today would have been, well you can guess. It would be insulting more legendary women like Funmilayo Ransome Kuti, whose courage I personally admire and marvel at. It would be to undermine our powerful mothers—some of whom had to raise their children alone, without the support of any man. So, in the words of another feminist I admire, Chimamanda Adichie, “We should all be feminists.”
Feminism is advocating the rights of women and/or supporting equality of women. Feminism is NOT hatred of men. Feminism does not in anyway disprove your desire for a husband or boyfriend. As far as I am concerned, feminism is the freedom to choose. It is when women are allowed to be whatever they want to be. It is freewill. Feminism is respecting the woman whose ultimate choice is to be a homemaker. Feminism is also respecting the other woman whose goal is to be the next Sheryl Sandberg, or the next Marissa Mayer, or the next Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. None of those choices trumps the other. As far as it is the woman’s choice, it is valid.
Therefore, let us accept the brightly burning torches that these great women have passed onto us and keep passing it on. Let us teach our daughters that playing victim is for the loser. Deciding to choose victory irrespective of what the society says of you is indeed the real victory. Let us teach those coming behind us that they are more than what the see in the mirror. What they see in the mirror is fabulous; it’s just that what they have inside—that beautiful mind—is even more amazing.
Here’s to great women; may we know them, may we be them, may we raise them.
Happy International Women’s day to all the wonderful women you and I have ever known, and most especially to my wonderful mother.

INEC Extends March 8 Deadline for Collection of PVCs By 2 Weeks

pvc
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has extended the March 8 deadline for collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) by two weeks.
This is contained in a statement signed by Kayode Idowu, the Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja.
The statement said the period for the collection of the PVCs had been extended from March 8 to March 22.
“This latest extension offers the last opportunity for duly registered voters to collect their PVCs before the general elections scheduled for March 28 and April 11,’’ the statement said.
It called on registered voters who are yet to collect their PVCs to use the opportunity of the extension to collect their cards to enable them exercise their franchise during the polls.

Nnenna & Odunze’s Vibrant Silver & Red Wedding in Enugu! | TeammTouch Photography

Nnenna & Odunze Wedding in Enugu, Nigeria | BellaNaija 2015 b (21)Nnenna and Odunze met and got married in the ‘Coal City’, Enugu!
Odunze, the groom, met his bride on a visit to her parents’ house,
“We met at Nnenna’s home in Enugu. I was visiting Nigeria for my dad’s 70th, and decided to go deliver an invitation to her parents. I stumbled into their gym, and there she was; running on the treadmill. The rest is history.”
Nnenna was over the moon when he proposed in Vegas!
“The proposal took place at the Bellagio Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. After dinner and a Cirque du Soleil show, a nervous Odunze dropped down on his knees and asked if I would like to spend the rest of my life with him.”
On the wedding day, the bride was blessed that her ‘something old’ was her mother’s wedding dress, which she wore with only a few alterations.
The wedding colours – red, white and silver, perfectly complemented the festive season of Christmas, when their wedding took place. The bride’s red rose and carnation bouquet was breathtaking! Along with the red bridesmaids dresses, Badgley Mischka Kiara heels, and her silver Terani Couture gown, the colours set the stage for a vibrant day.
Nnenna’s traditional attire also reflected her unique sense of style – a beautifully beaded bustier top and a strapless red lace mermaid dress, then a gold blouse and skirt with layers of tulle on the train.
When we asked the couple what advice they have for other couples, here’s what they had to say,
“Marriage is a beautiful thing, just do it with the right person. The perfect person doesn’t exist, but the perfect fit is definitely out there. No secrets, let the worst of you be known first.

Beauty For Ashes! BN Reader Priscilla-Joy Shares the Story of Survival After Rape & Abuse as a Child

It truly is a big deal that I’ve grown to love and accept myself – not only as a human being but as a woman. I remember when I was a little girl, I hated everything about me: from my body to my feelings. The reason why I had those feelings and the fact that I was born female. I thought that my gender defined me, I thought that being a girl meant that I was weak and inconsequential, I looked at my body and felt that God must have made a mistake to put it together to form me if I was born to be a play thing for the male folk from as little as I was back then. I wondered how it was possible that I was made that way – and at the same time, be given the ability to feel what I felt. And yes I felt shame, sometimes anxiety, other times hopelessness and a dreadful panic that maybe I would grow to constantly experience these unwanted and vile sexual encounters with wicked men whose only thoughts were to molest me.
So, I grew up with these thick walls around me that enabled me to keep people at a distance, never allowing anyone to get close enough to know who I really am. I feared that somehow they would discover my secret, and since it’s not a secret I was proud of I protected it with all I had.
I have lived many lives in different cities across the world, even the ones that don’t truly exist, because it was my way of coping with what was happening to me. I would often be lost in thought, weaving my very own happy and grand story about how precious and important I am and how I’m valued – lauded and admired for great accomplishments and for no other reason but just because I’m a human being.
At the time it began, I was just in nursery school with my brothers when our house boy of about early 20s began to sexually abuse me. He said that there was something about me that made him want to touch me and made me swear not to tell anyone, especially my parents. My dad was very strict, and at the time my step sister had gotten pregnant by a boy in her school. Daddy found out and sent her away to her mum at Ogun state. Therefore, if I didn’t want to end up like her, I had to keep shut since my own mother was living with us or I would be driven out and become homeless.
In my young mind I believed that there had to be something wrong with me for him to want to touch me and have sex with me. Initially I didn’t know that what he was doing to me was wrong, but I knew it was painful and it felt like down there was on fire. Being born in a Christian family, my mum constantly preached about God and how he loves children so I often wondered when I got older and understood that what was happening to me wasn’t happening to other girls, why He didn’t save me.
The peculiar thing about my story is that I was also sexually abused by my cousin. I cannot even remember how it began, but he started where our house boy stopped and I saw myself being pulled into hidden corners and sexually abused once again.
All these happened between the age of 5 and 9. These experiences birthed an insecurity in me that would have me grow up with no self-esteem, no self-love and zero confidence in myself. I was consumed with so much anger; therefore I became reclusive and paranoid, believing that everyone was out to hurt me especially the opposite sex. Till this day I still fear people. But I’ve come to see over the years that abuse is a gift that keeps on giving. It affects its victims in very different ways; some go on to live very destructive lives, dabbling in drugs, prostitution, abusive relationships, and so on just to cope. I went on to have very bad experiences to the point that I wished I could die. By the time I left for boarding school at secondary level for the first time, I came home with a little courage that gave me the ability to stand up to my cousin and threaten to kill him if he ever laid a hand on me again.
I was driven to excel in everything I did, just to prove to myself that there was more to me than my body. The people around admired the young, beautiful and intelligent loner, but my inside was a car crash. My friends often wondered why I was alone more than I was in a relationship, I didn’t really have an answer for them, but all I knew was that I was searching for something. An answer was one, information – another; but more so I was restless for more, I was angry. I had no iota of peace in my heart and I was awkward around people. Why would anyone want to be around that?
I often pondered on why I could feel other people’s pain so deeply. I wondered why I could recognise that there’s a somebody in a nobody. It is because I didn’t and I don’t have a self to get in the way. I’m always careful not to talk down or judge a runs girl/prostitute, because I don’t know how God shielded me from that. I could easily have turned out like them, not for money but for lack of self-control and falling prey to sexual predators.
I thought I lacked substance and the fact that I could feel others meant that I had nothing of myself to feel, but the very thing that was a source of shame actually turned out to be a source of enlightenment. So I stopped giving my self-worth so much importance and began to search for peace and a deeper meaning in life instead. That was the beginning of my journey and love relationship with God. Over time and with practice, I’ve tried to live more and more for my essence.
You see, I was too busy trying to make something out of myself, resisting any form of connection with a man at every stage of my life that I didn’t know there was someone who wanted me to just pause for a minute and acknowledge Him, recognise the beauty of His creation and give Him my heart so that He could do wonders with it.
So I stand and call myself woman. God has healed my heart and shown me what a great privilege it is to be born female. I no longer want to be anyone else but me. I thought to tell this story because there just might someone who feels like she’s alone, like her life isn’t worth much. Look to God for rest, give Him your heart. He can do wonders with every little thing that you give Him. Give Him your little.
It is not over until it’s truly over, no matter what your journey has been like, continue to keep faith and hold unto the promise that God laid in your heart. Recognise and trust your process, and don’t ever let anybody tell you that you don’t matter. Look for people who truly see you, who see your heart and accepts all of you because they believe you’re enough. Water seeks its own level; seek out your garden, tend to it and make it beautiful and don’t forget that everyone is fighting one battle or the other. The world needs more encouragers, we have a surplus of critics already.
