Bearded lady reveals she now loves her unshaven look after years of bullying

24yr old Harnaam Kaur, who lives in Berkshire, UK, and suffers from what doctors calls polycystic ovary syndrome (facial hair growth in women) says she now loves her beards and have stopped trying to get rid of it. Harnaam said she started growing the beards when she was just 11 years old and had to endure years of bullying and people making fun of her.

Harnaam, who once attempted suicide, had in the past tried to wax, bleach and shave the hair which also started growing on her chest and arms but finally decided to stop after being baptised as a Sikh, a religion that forbids the cutting of body hair. She's now speaking up about her new-found confidence.

Speaking during an appearance on This Morning, Harnaam said:
"At the end of the day, I love myself and the way that I'm formed. Going through primary and secondary school with the facial hair, kids can be nasty. It led me to self harm and wanting to take my own life. It takes a lot of strength to say, 'I want to kill myself. A split second is all it took. That thought process really empowered me to just carry on with life.
"I'm more spiritual now than I am religious, I live my life the way I see fit. I stand for what I am. To be labelled as a woman you can look however you want."
Harnaam is now working on a campaign to show that name-calling has a big impact with anti-bullying charity Fixers and appears in a short film with her brother.

FirstBank Savings Bonanza: What FirstBank Promises, FirstBank Delivers

It was a remarkable close to the FirstBank Savings Bonanza Draws on March 12, 2015 at the All Seasons Plaza, Agindigbi Ikeja. The ultimate giveaway of prizes spanning over 7 months saw more than 1,500 customers rewarded through the bonanza initiative.

The event was mixed with laughter, fun challenges, popping of champagne for the winner, handing out of amazing prizes, and some “shoki and sekem” dance moves.

The exciting event was attended by the Group Head of Lagos Mainland, First Bank of Nigeria, Olufunke Smith; Group Head Products and Marketing Support, Biodun Famuyiwa; Manager of KPMG, Mr. Martins Olajide, pressmen, past beneficiaries from the quarterly and monthly draws as well as  well-wishers.

According to the Group Head of Lagos Mainland FirstBank of Nigeria, Mrs. Olufunke Smith, “the FirstBank Savings Bonanza was a way of thanking the customers for their 120 Years of patronage and loyalty”. Past winners of the last draws, amongst who was a cash prize winner of N50, 000, Jonathan Okeleke and one of the grand car prize winners, Banji Ajuwon were also recognized.

Using this as an avenue to jumpstart the quarterly draws for the grand finale, past car prize winner; Banji Ajuwon was invited to extend his blessing by picking the first draw for the winners of the brand new Toyota Corolla cars, with 6 customers emerging as car winners. Other draws were made to select the winners for the 50,000 cash prize, home theatres, LCD televisions and Samsung Galaxy Phones.

To ensure winners from the draws knew the status of the prizes, winners were reached via phone calls.  When one of the winners of the Toyota Corolla cars, Mrs Ebisan Onyema was called, she did not believe it was for real as she thought it was a scam. A vehicle was sent to her place of residence to convey her to the event venue and was welcomed with cheers from the crowd upon her arrival. She was very emotional and totally lost for words and when asked when she wanted her car, she said “Monday, 16 March 2015”.

As promised, one of the six cars won at the draws was presented on Monday 16 of March 2015 at the First Bank Nigeria Head Office at Marina, Lagos. The GMD, Bisi Onasanya who was on hand to deliver the car to the winner, Mrs Ebisan Onyema stated that “FirstBank enjoys rewarding its customers and will always keep to words and promises made”.

For the winner, Mrs Onyema who has been a FirstBank customer for 25 years, she couldn’t believe it when she was told she had won a car and her bankers didn’t believe it either. According to her, “People can now see and understand why I am running to FirstBank, FirstBank is truly the best and everybody should have an account with them” she added joyfully.

Amongst those who attended the car presentation event were senior executives of FirstBank and the cast of soon to be launched TV series, “Before 30” which included actress Damilola  Adegbite-Attoh and Anee Icha. Also on ground were Noble Igwe and other notable media personalities.

Doc Ayomide: 7 Ways Nollywood Might Be Misleading You on Mental Health Illness

Nollywood has stepped up plenty in the last decade or so, and become we can be proud of. From oldies (sort of) like Ije and Figurine, to recent hits like Half of a Yellow Sun and October 1, we’ve seen better and better movies and TV shows.
But there’s one area Nollywood — and Nigerian TV in general — still falls short. (No prizes for guessing which!)
Mental health.
Honestly, if Nollywood and Naija TV were our teachers, and mental health our curriculum, we’d all barely make it past Primary One! And that’s sad, because media has such a huge influence on how we see and think about things. (I’ve written before about how even Tinsel isn’t exempt.) It’s a massive opportunity just down the toilet.
But today’s not the day to rant. Today, I want to talk about what we might wrongly believe about mental health and illness if we actually believed Nollywood (and Nigerian TV as a whole — although I bet it’s probably not too different with other African countries).
Anyway, in no particular order, here are the top 7 myths from Nigeria’s film and TV scene…
People with mental illness are violent and unreasonable
Okay, I know I said these things are in no particular order, but this might well be number one misconception our media reinforces. I’ve written a series of articles on this (here, here and here), but suffice to say here that it’s simply NOT true. People with mental illness are no more violent than anyone else.
Mental illness makes people dumb
“Dumb” as in lacking sense, I mean. This misconception is connected to the first one, but it’s slightly different: it’s the idea that mental disorders make people act stupid. On the contrary, though, mental illness doesn’t necessarily affect intelligence. I once saw a chap faking mental illness — you know how I knew? He was acting silly!
There’s only one type of mental illness
Almost every instance of mental illness on Nigerian media is the same type. You’d totally be forgiven for thinking “mental illness” was only one specific diagnosis. But it’s so much more. Yes, there are disorders (and they’re not that frequent) that make people act strangely (although the way they are portrayed in media leaves much to be desired).
As for the commonest mental disorders, depression and anxiety disorders: how often do you see those? And would you ever have guessed how frequent they were from watching TV? Almost certainly not.
Mental illnesses come from curses
Our number one top cause of mental illness would probably be curses. It might be different in cities like Lagos and Abuja (but is it really?). In our less urban areas, though, curses are a major risk factor for mental illness.
People are sometimes thrown out of home because the family didn’t want the curse coming on them. (I kid you not.) And even when the person with a mental disorder is accommodated, it’s often at arm’s length. You know, just in case – which is sad, because these things are medical problems.
This also ties in to the next Nollywood-perpetuated belief…
Mental illness is not a reason to go to the hospital
It’s not like you ever explicitly hear this said, but besides Tinsel (which must be commended for trying in that area), how many movies or series have you seen where someone with mental illness was treated in hospital? (I’m serious, let me know in the comments where that happened.) Typically the first visit is to religious or traditional healers. (Which fits with believing it’s caused by a curse, right?)
The problem with that? In my real-life work, few people come to the hospital without having spent time trying out other options. Except that’s usually enough time for the problems to significantly worsen. Medical treatments are available for many mental disorders, contrary to what you might think, they actually work. Think about that.
Mental illness is caused by hard drugs
Most psychiatrists are familiar with this one. We often see people whose families are convinced that they are using hard drugs for no other reason than that they’re mentally ill. When movies don’t show people with mental illnesses as being cursed, they show them as having used drugs. But many people use drugs without becoming ill, and many become ill without using drugs. (That’s many as in millions.)
Mental illnesses are sudden
You know the typical scene when someone first develops a mental disorder, right? It’s always sudden. One minute the person is acting normally, and the next, everything’s out of whack.
Not in real life. In real life, it takes weeks and months, sometimes years. It’s rare that it happens in days, and even then, suddenness may point to a more physical problem.
So what do we do about all this?
First, let’s get this straight: our media isn’t really the problem. It’s not like these beliefs are new – they mostly existed before. They’re not so much instilling them into people as perpetuating ideas we already have.
And that’s the real issue. Media has the power to influence our views, and when those who are behind it only address stereotypes instead of the complexity of reality, everyone loses.
This isn’t new. The battle against stigma in HIV/AIDS was won with the help of the media. Media helped to fight the misconception surrounding it (such as HIV/AIDS not being a real thing). But imagine how messed up it’d have been if HIV/AIDS had been depicted in ways reinforcing our wrong beliefs about it.
That’s exactly what still happens with mental disorders.
So no, our media isn’t the problem; but they aren’t being part of the solution. They can be, and they should. Because we deserve better, and we should demand better.
Question: Have you yourself had any of these ideas about mental disorders, whether from movies or TV or from other sources? Which of them do you still hold on to?

Peculiar Okafor: 6 Laws That Could Change the Nation

I remember the Ikeja Bomblast of January 27 2002. I was in SS 1 at the time and had just started to learn about volcanic eruptions and other natural activities. I had actually left the house with a note and Camera with the intention of going as close as possible to the source of the explosion just to take notes and pictures (mind you, we didn’t know what was happening at the time, lots of people were peddling rumours of war and an Osama bin Laden invasion, my 12 year old self in her naivete was praying it was some natural biological activity of some sort). I eventually abandoned my curiosity and ran away with my family and most residents of the areas affected when the explosions became too scary. (Nigerians love their lives)
The story above is largely unconnected with what I have to write though it does lay the grounds to point out that I have always been a curious homosapien and of late. My mind has been wandering to various laws that could change our lives at least socially.
Music Video Laws
What if the law banned songs about females, their body parts and how they made men ‘Kolo’, how many musicians would we have? What about if those who claim to have ‘made it’ and be ‘balling’ and ‘making money’ are required to show proof of these or be arrested for willfully misleading the public? We might have fewer songs with really deep meanings but maybe no club bangers and man do we love our club bangers.
Cheating Laws
What if men were required by law to pay their spouses 10% of their total assets for each time they cheat. Meaning if you are worth N 10 million, you will be required by law to pay your wife N 1 million each time you are caught cheating. I’m sure we’ll have reduced cases of infidelity or maybe just the invention of ingenious ways to hide affairs. (Don’t even ask what is required of women who cheat. I am a woman and so I am biased; besides these men flaunt their cheating).
Relationship Advice Laws
What if you actually had to be happily married and also provide proof of how you have helped couples improve their relationships before you offer any form of relationship advice especially on Social Media. I guess all these recently engaged peeps will no longer flood social media with their ‘advice’ but then won’t we be bored when we have fewer stuff to discuss on blogs.
Hater Laws
What if that word ‘Hater’ was banned? Maybe we can then offer our honest opinions on stuff we don’t agree with without fear of being labelled the ‘H’ word and musicians and youngsters will stop disturbing the peace with how they’ll shame their ‘Haters’?
Runs Girl Laws
What if it was legal and acceptable to actually refer to someone as a ‘Runz girl’. I’m sure we’ll have fewer blog and magazine headlines that read ‘ Nollywood actress and entrepreneur….’ or ‘Popular Lagos big girl ……..’ would we be happier if we just read ‘Runz girl ….’ instead or would we complain about how we were endorsing wrong or even labeling people wrongly. Maybe Nollywood actress and entrepreneur/Lagos big girl are better descriptions biko, there’s no gain in labeling people.
Instagram Celebrity Laws
What if Social Media celebrities were required to pay tax? Most people accuse them of needing validation or recognition of some sort hence the monetary value of this validation and seemingly easy fame will be computed and taxed. Tax attorneys and consultants can work out the modalities but then won’t our lives be a tad boring if we had no pictures or posts to look at? Besides, some people just love pictures and posting stuff online. Who are we to conclude that they have unhappy lives and are seeking validation online? Whatever happened to live and let live?
The above laws will definitely not be passed or even discussed amongst our lawmakers. We have more serious issues. But this writeup and questions were informed by reading comments on blogs and listening to people in general. We hear people ask why we can’t return to the good old days when ‘songs had deep meaning’ only to shoki almost immediately. We ask why someone believes he/she can offer relationship advice just because they got engaged and to this I respond that freedom of speech is one of the dividends of democracy. Dem no force you to accept the advice.
For the social media celebrities, let them be. Don’t follow them or visit their pages. Just leave them alone. And if someone says she is an actress or entrepreneur, then that is what she is. Even if you can’t point to a movie acted, just agree, it isn’t that hard. Live and let live folks and if you believe you have haters. Remember the scripture says ‘pray for those who spitefully hate you’.
Have a lovely day folks.

Ofilispeaks Success Showcase: 4 Nigerian Olympic Medalists Overcome Obstacles To Become Champions

Tajikistan a landlocked sovereign country in Central Asia with a population of barely 8 million won a bronze medal at the London 2012 Olympics. However Nigeria, with a 170 million plus people did not win a single Olympic medal! With facts like that, it’s easy to forget that Nigeria once won Olympic medals and they did so despite many obstacles.
Cue Glory Alozie (Silver medallist 2000 Sydney Olympics), Deji Aliu (Bronze medallist 2004 Athens Olympics), Francis Obikwelu (Under Portugal Silver medalist Athens 2004) and Uchenna Emedolu (Bronze: Athens 2004), all Nigerian born athletes who will tell us how they overcame their obstacles to become champions.
However, it’s not easy to catch up with 4 of the fastest Nigerians in the world. But thanks to Making Of Champions I was able to get all four of them in the same room to talk and here’s what they had to say…
Francis Obikwelu: The Fighting Warrior
Francis-Obikwelu
In 2004, Nigerian born Francis Obikwelu won a silver medal at the Athens 2004 Olympics game running for Portugal. While his switch from Nigeria to Portugal was mired with nationalistic controversy, Francis Obikwelu had to overcome a lot to be able to stand on the podium…
In his teenage years, he moved to Portugal with hopes of joining an athletic club but after getting rejected by two top clubs he had to pick up work as a construction worker before eventually joining the Belenenses sport club.
And then in 2000 after competing at the Sydney Olympics for Nigeria, he injured his knee and required surgery. With no support from the Nigerian sports ministry, Francis underwent a self funded reconstructive knee surgery in Canada.
However, the doctor/surgeon informed him that he would not be able to run again. But Francis Obikwelu, true to his fighting spirit, did the impossible.
“I don’t give up on anything. Right from when I was a kid, I always live to fight another day… I can do anything no matter what happens.”
And he did just that … throwing away the crutches as well as the doctor’s advice. He looked at himself as an athlete and not a disabled person. This mind shift and belief pushed him to want to succeed and even with his bad leg he began training aggressively …
Abandoned by many, discouraged by his doctor but yet motivated by a want to succeed, Francis was able to not only win the Diamond league that season, but he was able to win a 100 m silver medal in the 2004 Athens Olympics. Approximately 4 years after his doctor said he would not be able to run again!
“You have to know how to win and how to lose. Be strong and disciplined because having an injury can weigh one down, but having these things (belief) would pull you through.”
FACTS: Francis Obikwelu still holds the Nigerian 200 meters record with a time of 19.84 seconds. He is still the only Nigerian to ever run the 200 meters in less than 20 seconds.
Glory Alozie: Wonder Woman
Glory-Alozie
In 2000 Glory Alozie was one of the favorites to win the 100 meter hurdles at the Sydney Olympics. But just a few days before the games began, Glory Alozie lost her fiancé Hyginus Anugo, a fellow member of the Nigerian track-and-field squad in a ghastly car accident.
Stunned by his death, Glory could not eat and barely trained for day… she had become so frail from loss of appetite she had to be spoon-fed by her Spanish coach, Rafael Blanque. She lost 13 pounds.
While many would have given up, Glory powered on to win the Silver medal in the Sydney 2000 Olympics …her secret to Olympic medal success was trusting in God to give her the victory. He did – embellishing her with a shimmering silver medal.
“Sometimes when people go through tough times, they quit but it shouldn’t be so. Situations around might be frustrating but that’s why you need a goal, because you must remained focused. If you do that, you will surely make it.”
Her final word of advice to upcoming athletes “Be focused and disciplined, because you can’t go far without discipline. That’s the only way they can get to the top.”
Discipline and a focus on God, recipes to overcome hurdles no matter how tragic!
FACTS: Glory Alozie still holds the African 100 m hurdles record with 12.44 seconds. A time she has run 3 times.
Uchenna Emedolu: The Focused Motivator
Uchenna-Emedolu-2
As one of only 8 Nigerian men to run below 10 seconds in the 100 m, Uchenna Emedolu is a running force to be reckoned with, but it was not always that rosy for him.
It was the 2008 Beijing 4X100m Olympic relay race …the baton exchange between Uchenna Emedolu and Chinedu Oriala and that’s when it happened. Uchenna dropped the baton, dashing Nigeria’s hope at a medal. This was not the first time Uchenna had encountered failure.
In 1998 he travelled to Malta to try out as a footballer but failed … eventually returning back to Abia state to try out athletics. His mother also pushed back on his dream to be an athlete, but he persevered and credits his early success to being focused on God
“When I started track I was born again, so I didn’t really have girlfriends to discourage me, because that kind of lifestyle does not help you focus.”
The focus worked because at the IAAF World Cup in Madrid, 2002 he ran against Francis (Obikwelu), Jon Drummond (USA), Dwain Chambers (Britain) to win gold. And won an Olympic Bronze medal in the Athens 2004 Olympic games.Today he coaches other upcoming Nigerian athletes. Uchenna is a constant believer in his ability and ultimately the ability of Nigerians.
“We have so much talent in Nigeria. Our athletes should not be afraid of competing with other athletes from other countries. All we need is the right kind of support and our athletes would be the best in the world.”
Every Nigerian has the potential to be great!
FACTS: Uchenna Emedolu is one of only 8 Nigerians to run the 100 meters in less than 10 seconds.
Deji Aliu: Passion Wins
Deji-Aliu-square
At the 1996 National trials, a relatively unknown runner Deji Aliu, lined up against Nigerian greats Chidi Imoh, Davidson Ezinwa. It was his first major race locally and he came second losing only to Davidson Ezinwa.
Since then he has gone on to represent Nigeria at the highest stage, winning a 2004 Bronze Medal at the Athens Olympics. But with such success, it is easy to forget that Deji once faced many obstacles.
First from his parents who were initially disappointed by his choice of athletics; but when he started winning and succeeding, his parents eventually gave in and decided to support his move. His story is one of pushing back against the Engineering/Doctor status quo for Nigerian parents.
A lot of Nigerian children don’t push back enough about their passion. Even friends tried to convince him to reconsider, but luckily he did not, leading Nigeria to that rare Olympic medal and running below 10 seconds in 100 meters 3 times, one of the few Nigerians to ever do that.
At the end of the day, passion was key to Deji’s success in overcoming obstacles.
“The passion I had for the sport was just too much for me to turn back; I just kept going.”
FACTS: Deji Aliu holds the Nigerian 60 meters indoor record with a time of 6.48 seconds.
Conclusion: Keep Moving Forward
“If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.”
Words from civil rights activities Martin Luther King. Words that aptly describe the 4 amazing Nigerian athletes above. Their lessons show us that success is not easy and comes with the inevitable obstacles … from losing a loved one, to being discouraged by family and friends but still never quitting on your dream and eventually rising to the top! Words from champions to live with. No matter the size of the obstacle, keep moving and keep pushing!
Interview of the athletes was made possible by Making of Champions who are working to revive athletics in Nigeria, visit www.makingofchamps.com for more details on their athletic projects or to see how you can participate.

Ej Ogenyi: If Your Life is So Busy, Why Aren’t You Losing Weight?

17.03.2015 at 12:22 pm By EJ Ogenyi 8 Comments
IMG_4385 SmallYou wake up very early and start your day at breakneck speed. Regardless of how you spend your day, it starts with activity and ends with you wondering where the hours went. It feels like you didn’t have the time to put your feet up all day. As you get ready for bed, you look yourself in the mirror and wonder why being this busy day in day out isn’t translating to losing the weight that you’d like to. In fact, you might find yourself gaining weight.
If this sounds like you, the first thing you need to understand that might help ease your frustration is that being busy and being active are two different things. Being busy is having a lot of things to do in the fixed time you have while being active takes some conscious effort to move your body within that busy schedule. Also, you might be ignoring how you eat if you’re relying on being busy to lose weight. So let’s look at being active and how you’re eating in more detail.
Are You Really as Active as You Think You Are?
Being busy and being active are not the same things. Being busy might mean that you spend a lot of time answering customer questions on the phone or at your computer doing your job. Being active means actually moving your body in space and using your muscles in ways that burn calories while you do these activities.
The most effective way to determine how active you are is to use an activity tracker. You can do this by getting your hands on a pedometer or another type of activity tracker to see if you are actually spending time moving around all day or if the exhaustion is a result of things like not getting enough sleep, staring at a computer for too long, or dealing with stressful people at your job.
If you’re interested in getting a tracker, click here to read how to select the best activity tracker for your goals and your lifestyle.
Are you Eating in a Way to Support Your Weight Loss?
When you spend so much of your time attending to the work you have to do and the other people in your life, what you eat might be the last thing on your mind. This is especially true if you think that being so busy should mean that you’re getting all the activity that you need to compensate for your diet.
Even if you’re getting all the activity that you need, that doesn’t condone a bad diet. The alternative – a healthy diet – isn’t something that you do for a few weeks and give up when you see the results that you want. A healthy diet includes a good mix of whole grains and healthy sources of carbohydrates, lean proteins, fruits, and vegetables. More importantly, a healthy diet that’ll help you lose weight includes all this in moderate amounts and in a way that you can sustain for the long-term.
Now – Are You Ready to Get More Active?
If you are, I’ve written a handy post that can help you get started with fitting exercise into your busy schedule. But if you can’t even see yourself making time for that right now try something as simple as taking several 5 – 10 minute walking breaks everyday. It might not drop the weight off you immediately, but it’ll start injecting some actual activity into your busy day. Plus, it might get you thinking about what more you can do to be active when you see yourself doing this successfully.
And to help you eat healthier, stay tuned in the coming weeks to learn the components of a healthy diet and how to adapt these components into your busy lifestyle. For now, answer me this: are you actually active or are you just busy? And if you aren’t active, do you see yourself taking steps to fit formal activity into your schedule?
BLACKBERRY SLIDER (GLIDE)

Blackberry flashes a glimpse of the blackberry slider which is said to be incorporated with designs from the old blackberry torch. Ever since the blackberry slider was captured in photos, blackberry users around the world have been waiting in deep desires to feel its awesomeness in reality.

Though it has not been officially released to the public, a render which was created by Dylon Habkirk has given us a preview of how the blackberry slider might look like in reality. You can catch a glimpse of the computer generated graphics of the slider below.

BLACKBERRY PORSCHE DESIGN PASSPORT CONCEPTS

While BlackBerry and Porsche Design took the covers off the P'9983 Graphite earlier, there's still another Porsche Design device slated for this year under the codename 'Keian' in honor of Keian Blundell and it's widely rumored, expected and hoped to be a variation of the BlackBerry Passport.
